What is it and what is it for?

The outdoor compost bin, as its name suggests, is a large bin in which you will place your waste and organic matter and other rubbish, with the aim of composting them. It’s a sort of food recycling bin.

It can be placed outdoors, at the bottom of the garden for example if you have one, but also on a reduced size of course to install on an apartment balcony. We place the waste in this way, and we then let nature do its work. The waste will gradually deteriorate and thus turn into compost.

There are several types of compost bins, each having its advantages and disadvantages. You can find traditional wood or metal bins, rotating bins, plastic bins, canvas bins, fiberglass bins, and even self-rotating compost bins.

Traditional planters are often made of wood or metal, which gives an authentic look to your garden. Rotating bins allow compost to be activated more easily and quickly, while canvas bins are very light and can be transported more easily. Plastic bins are affordable, easy to maintain, and resistant to UV rays.

Why buy a composting bin?

No need to buy a compost bin if you don’t plan to use it. Because unlike other accessories or exterior equipment, this one will not beautify your garden, and is far from being a decorative element, quite the contrary.

On the other hand, if you want to produce less waste, or in any case be able to reuse it, then the compost bin is ideal. What’s more, if in your garden you have a small vegetable garden for example, which will allow you to use said compost.

Ideally, I recommend an outdoor wooden compost bin. Many are made of plastic, but in addition to being ugly, they are not at all eco-friendly! The goal of composting is precisely to make an ecological gesture by reusing organic waste, so good… The model that I recommend, particularly for its simplicity, but above all its price, is without a doubt this one :

When and where to install your garden composter?

The composter should normally be installed in the garden, however, and as said above, it can be installed on an apartment balcony. But it will have to be smaller, and you will have to opt for a model with a lid to avoid bad odors. Of course and I remind you, if you don’t plan to use the compost afterwards, it would be a shame to go through the hassle.

So, we will place it at the bottom of the garden, if possible and at best, in a place that is not too visible because aesthetically speaking, it is not one of the best elements of garden decoration. The location in question should not be too shady or too sunny. Organic materials must be able to decompose normally.

How to choose the best outdoor composter in this comparison?

If you want to buy an outdoor compost bin, although the best solution is still to make a simple pile at the bottom of your garden, there are some purchasing criteria to take into account!

We will look at the material first! We avoid plastic as much as possible, even if the majority is made of this material and we prefer wood. We will opt for a model with a lid depending on the location, just as we will have to choose the right size. No need to have a huge one if you only have a small piece of garden.

In the same way, a model that is too small, if you are a family and only use compost very rarely, will not be sufficient. Finally, we will also look at whether it has ventilation(s) and if price-wise, it is within your budget.

My opinion on garden composting bins!

Compost bins are a first alternative if you want to recycle your waste; and especially with regard to organic matter. But buying one simply because of a fad or other trend is pointless. If you don’t plan to use said compost afterwards, you might as well avoid wasting your money.

If not, then this can be a good start, especially if you live in an urban area, or don’t want organic matter lying around in your garden. But in my opinion, the ideal is still to do without a compost bin, and to simply make a pile, or better still, incorporate your waste directly into the soil of your portage or garden!
