How to make a zero waste sponge

If I tell you that it is possible to make an ecological, reusable and economical sponge with materials you already have at home, do you believe me? In any case, I assure you that it is possible! Today, I’m sharing with you a simple and fun method for making a zero-waste tawashi sponge, a sustainable alternative to classic sponges.

Whether you are already a fan of zero waste or simply curious to try a DIY (Do It Yourself) activity, follow these steps and discover an eco-friendly gesture that is good for your home AND the planet.

What is a tawashi sponge?

Originally from Japan, tawashi is an ecological sponge made from recovered textiles. The principle? Give a second life to old clothes like tights, socks or t-shirts, and transform them into a solid, reusable and washable sponge.

Unlike synthetic sponges which quickly end up in the trash, tawashis are a sustainable solution: they are easily machine washed and can be used for both washing dishes and cleaning.

Why adopt tawashi?

Here are some good reasons to start making a tawashi sponge:

  • Sustainability : Stronger than traditional sponges, they will serve you for a long time.
  • Ecological : No plastic, no unnecessary waste!
  • Economical : No need to buy new sponges every month.
  • Playful : This is a fun DIY activity to share with your loved ones.
  • A gesture for the planet : By reusing your used textiles, you reduce waste and encourage a responsible lifestyle.

The equipment you need

Ready to get started? Here’s what you need:

  1. Old tights or socks : They will be the base of your tawashi. Make sure they are clean, then cut them into strips of fabric.
  2. A homemade loom : A wooden or cardboard frame with a few nails placed in a square (5 to 6 nails per side are enough).
  3. Clothespins : Very practical for holding the strips in place during weaving.

How to make your tawashi sponge: the steps

Step 1: Prepare the Fabric Strips

Start by cutting your tights or socks into strips approximately 2 to 3 cm wide. These pieces will form the loops for weaving.

Step 2: Set up your loom

Make a simple frame out of wood or cardboard. Install nails to form a square. You will need to hang the strips on these nails to create your tawashi.

Step 3: Weave your tawashi

  • Hang a first strip in one corner of the frame and stretch it to the opposite nail. Repeat to create a horizontal grid.
  • Next, add strips in the other direction (vertical). Pass them alternately over and under the horizontal strips to create a tight weave.

Step 4: Finalize the sponge

Once finished weaving, carefully remove the sponge from the nails while securing each end with a knot. Well done, your tawashi sponge is ready to use!

My personal tip

When I first tested this method, I used a cardboard loom. If you don’t have a wooden frame, this is an ideal alternative to get started. Don’t hesitate to have fun with the colors of the bands to personalize your tawashi and make it unique!
