In terms of periodic and hygienic protection regarding women’s menstruation, it is possible to move on to zero waste. An ecological advantage, but also an economic one. But you still need to know what to choose and buy, the advantages and disadvantages of each! Let’s find out all this together.
The different types of zero waste hygienic protection!
In my previous article I spoke to you about thezero waste feminine hygiene, without really going into detail. This time it is the case, and unlike the other article which was mainly intended to present alternatives, here I will explain to you why to choose them!
Reusable sanitary napkins
Classic, they replace disposable towels! Reusable sanitary napkins are comfortable and allow you to analyze both heavy and light flow. See my comparison.
Reusable menstrual sponges (Tampons)
Menstrual sponges replace classic tampons. A little less practical on the other hand, they are just as effective. See my comparison.
Washable hygienic panty liner
The panty liner, for its part, complements a sponge in case of heavy flow, but can also be used for urinary leaks. Very similar to towels after all. See my comparison.
Menstrual Cup (Cup)
There menstrual cup is used like a tampon, except that instead of absorbing, it simply contains the flow. Easier to clean, it is sometimes less pleasant. See my comparison.
Menstruation panties
Finally, menstruation panties avoid having the previous accessories. Aesthetic-wise it’s not yet that, but it’s ideal for girls and women who can’t stand towels, tampons or cups! See my comparison.
The advantages of using washable and reusable?
Of course, the main advantage of opting for reusable and washable periodic protection for women will be to protect the environment and pollution caused by disposable models. But there will also be a financial aspect, since in the long term it will allow you to save money.
Two birds with one stone therefore, using washable and reusable hygienic protection in my opinion is a very good zero waste alternative, but above all anti waste which as a bonus, saves us money. When you see the price per year, it can be scary!
Zero waste certainly, but efficient and comfortable?
In terms of comfort, it will depend on what you choose, tampons, towels, cups etc. But generally speaking, between disposable and reusable, comfort is more or less equal. In terms of effectiveness, here again it is very similar, and rather of good quality, provided that you obviously choose a model adapted both to your private part, and both to your flow.
Finally, in terms of hygiene, it’s more or less the same. The only real downside in the end is having to wash to reuse, which means that once used, you will have to put it away in the meantime..!
What to choose and use as periodic protection?
On the other hand, you will have to choose your reusable and washable periodic protection carefully, based on several criteria of course, such as use, comfort, your habits and preferences, or even quality and effectiveness!
Towel, tampon, cup or panties?
If you are not used to tampons, do not opt for sponges or cups, stick to towels and panties. They are much more comfortable and pleasant to wear. Classic, they will be just as effective, and you will have more choice!
Choice based on flow
In the same way, for large flows, we will prefer panties and towels, which are much more effective and can contain more than a simple tampon or cup. For small light flows, at the beginning or end of the period for example, the cup or sponge is sufficient.
Travel, sports activities, etc.
Depending on the activity and when you will wear said protection, some are more suitable than others. When traveling for example, it will be difficult for you to disinfect your cup, just as towels may be less comfortable during sporting activities, so we will prefer towels or sponges.
